Starting Point |
- Select your verse.
- Pray, thanking God for the
verse and ask Him to help you memorize and understand it.
If you don't know what you should memorize, pray and ask God
to give you direction.
- Read your verse aloud many
times until you are comfortable with it.
- Make sure you understand the
meanings of every word.
- Read the context surrounding
your verse so you can know why the verse was given.
- Become familiar with the
reference (the address of the verse)

Pick and choose from the
following. Try them all or only the ones that work for
you. These methods will also work great to help you
review what you have already learned. |
|
Memorizing Tip 1 |
Read your verse in small
phrases. Read that phrase over and over until you can
quote it.
Add the next phrase and
continue in the same manner until you have it all memorized. |
|
Memorizing Tip 2 |
Write out the verse on many
stick'em note pads or small sheets of paper. Some use 3
x 5 cards. By the time you get to this point you may
already know most of it by memory.
Place your written papers or
cards throughout your house, in a book you are reading, in
your car, in your purse, etc. Anytime you are in the
area of your verse, try to quote it from memory, looking at it
as needed. |
|
Memorizing Tip 3 |
Create a code by drawing
pictures that will give you hints to the verse.
MEMLOCK uses a picture
code and has an overall system that would work very well for
this type of memorizing. |
|
Memorizing Tip 4 |
Create a code by writing the
first letter of each word on a card. John 3:16 (KJV)
would look like this:
F G S L T W,
T H G H O B S,
T W B I H S N P,
B H E L. |
|
Memorizing Tip 5 |
Write the verse and the
reference (address) on a chalkboard or wordpad/notepad on your
computer. Erase one word from your verse and then see if
you can remember that word while you read it through. If
you use your computer, be sure to replace the word with either
XXX's or a blank ____. Erase another word and try to
read it through, remembering the second word you erased.
Continue this method until you have erased the whole verse AND
the reference (address). |
|
Memorizing Tip 6 |
Gather up many small pieces of
paper or 3 x 5 note cards. Write one word from your
verse on the card, then write the next word on another card
and continue until you have the whole verse written down --
one word at a time -- on many cards. Scramble these
cards up and try to remember which order they go in.
Use your Bible to help you if
you can't remember. If you use your Bible, scramble the
words up again and then try to place them in order again.
Each time you use your Bible to help you -- scramble. |
|
Memorizing Tip 7 |
Put your verse to song.
One of the easiest ways to learn something is to sing it.
Some people take and sing into a tape recorder so they can
listen to it as often as they need to for review. |
